Weather in the Mediterranean

Crete’s weather is a sun-soaked Mediterranean dream, offering warm, golden days nearly all year long. Summers, from May to October, are hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from 25–35°C. The island basks in endless sunshine, perfect for lounging on pristine beaches like Elafonissi, exploring ancient sites like Knossos, or dining al fresco under starry skies. A gentle sea breeze keeps even the warmest days pleasantly comfortable.

Spring and autumn are equally magical, with temperatures between 18–25°C. Spring sees the island bloom into a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers and greenery, ideal for hiking in the gorges or wandering quaint mountain villages. Autumn offers warm seas, fewer crowds, and golden light—perfect for soaking up Crete’s relaxed charm.

Winters are mild and peaceful, with temperatures around 10–18°C and occasional rain that refreshes the lush landscapes. Snow may dust the island’s dramatic mountain peaks, while the coasts remain inviting. Crete’s weather is as warm and welcoming as its people, making every season an opportunity to experience its beauty and history.

Things to do in Crete

Kick off your adventure in Heraklion, where you can explore the ancient ruins of the Palace of Knossos — the legendary labyrinth of King Minos! After an exciting journey through Minoan history, wander through the vibrant markets and indulge in some local Cretan delicacies like dakos or fresh seafood. Once you’ve had your fill of history and culture, head to the picturesque Elafonissi Beach, where pink sand meets turquoise waters, perfectly inviting you for a refreshing dip.

For a taste of the island’s natural beauty, trek the Samaria Gorge, where dramatic cliffs and lush flora make for an unforgettable hike. As the day winds down, enjoy a sunset dinner at a seaside taverna, where traditional Cretan music fills the air while you savor delectable dishes and local wines. With its breathtaking views, rich heritage, and unforgettable flavors, Crete is an island that captures the heart and soul of Greece!

The northern areas of the island combine tradition and tourism to provide a snapshot of Greek life whilst still providing the necessary requirements for a holiday. The south of the island is secluded and provides a more genuine feel of relaxed Greek culture.

The beaches of Crete are world famous for their crystal-clear waters. Every area of the island boasts stunning sandy beaches, with some being tourist orientated and others providing a quiet and secluded atmosphere. Balos is one of Crete’s most famous beaches, its shallow waters and soft sea bed make it a popular beach. Opposite the beach is a rocky island called Gramvoussa which has a Vernerian castle on top. Balos is the most picturesque beach in Crete.
