Hollywood Walk of Fame

Take a stroll and see the stars of your favorite celebrities.…

Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a landmark in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. It consists of more than 2,700 five-pointed terrazzo-and-brass stars embedded in the sidewalks along 15 blocks of Hollywood Boulevard and three blocks of Vine Street. The stars are monuments to achievement in the entertainment industry, bearing the names of a mix of actors, musicians, producers, directors, theatrical/musical groups, fictional characters, and others.

The Walk of Fame runs 1.3 miles east to west on Hollywood Boulevard, from Gower Street to the Hollywood and La Brea Gateway at La Brea Avenue, plus a short segment on Marshfield Way that runs diagonally between Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea; and 0.4 miles north to south on Vine Street between Yucca Street and Sunset Boulevard.

Each star bears the name of a celebrity who has made significant contributions to the entertainment industry. The name of the honoree is inlaid in brass block letters in the upper portion of each star. Below the inscription, in the lower half of the star field, a round inlaid brass emblem indicates the category of the honoree’s contributions. The emblems symbolize six categories within the entertainment industry: Classic film camera representing motion pictures, Television receiver representing broadcast television, Phonograph record representing audio recording or music, Radio microphone representing broadcast radio, Comedy/tragedy masks representing theater/live performance, and Athletic trophy representing sports entertainment.

The Walk of Fame is a popular tourist attraction, receiving an estimated 10 million annual visitors. It’s more than just a collection of celebrities’ names, it’s like an entertainment museum. You can spot your favorite Hollywood stars among the plaques lining the sidewalks, take an obligatory photo with the stars, and check out the handprints, footprints, and autographs of about 200 stars immortalized in the sidewalk of the historic TCL Chinese Theatre.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is administered by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who hold the trademark rights, and maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust. It was established on February 8, 1960, and the first stars were permanently installed in the same year. The Walk of Fame has played an important role in making tourism the largest industry in Los Angeles County.
